13-14 Teeners have blowout win over Lennox By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Tanner Anderson led off the first inning with a booming triple, scored minutes later on Layne Brown's single, and the Vermillion 13-14 Teeners were off and winging on a 12-2 blowout victory over Lennox in the first game of the Baseball Opening Day celebration at Prentis Park. An infield error and a groundout off Tanner Settles' bat scored two more first-inning runs for Vermillion, which scored in every inning of the five-inning game. Vermillion added four runs in a nine-batter second and even managed to score two runs on one passed ball. Jayce Huska, Colin Olson and Chayce Meierkort had hits in the inning, and two Lennox errors helped the home team's cause. Anderson had his second triple of the game in the third, scoring Olson, who had singled. Anderson scored again on Brown's infield out. In the fourth Vermillion picked up another run when Seth Miller drew a bases-loaded walk. Lennox scored its first run in the fourth on a walk, a hit by Joe Hendrickson and a wild pitch. They got their other run in the fifth on a walk and a pair of wild pitches. The team had only two hits off starter Mitch Brown, whose strikeouts accounted for seven of the 12 outs in the four innings he pitched. Layne Brown relieved to start the fifth and struck out the side. Leading 10-2 and needing two runs to end the game via the 10-run rule, Vermillion did so promptly in the bottom of the fifth. Layne Brown reached base on the fifth Lennox error in the ballgame, and Mitch Brown walked. Meierkort dramatically ended the game with a triple that scored both of the runs that made it a 10-run margin. Meierkort finished with three hits and three RBIs. Besides Anderson with his pair of triples, Olson also had two hits for Vermillion. Layne Brown, Settles and Huska had the other three Vermillion base knocks.
