15-16 Teeners taste defeat By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Vermillion's 15-16 Teeners saw a close game vanish in the middle innings Saturday, then couldn't stop a 13-batter, seven-run sixth inning as their Lennox opponents put the contest out of reach. Lennox finished with a 13-1 six-inning win in the second game of Vermillion's Baseball Opening Day celebration. Two first-inning runs by Lennox were offset by a single run by Vermillion in the bottom half of the first. Leadoff man Wes McBride reached on a shortstop's throwing error and advanced to second base on a failed pickoff move toward first. He scored on Tyler Husby's ringing double. But Vermillion would never score again. Meanwhile, Lennox added a run in the second and three in the fourth to lead 6-1 before the seven-run outburst in the sixth, which came on five hits and four walks. Vermillion managed six basehits off Lennox hurler Tyler Carroll, who struck out five. Besides Husby's double, the other hits were singles by Zach McDonald, Will Mart, Robert Osterberg, Scott Iverson and Caleb Miller. Alex DeVries of Lennox reached base five times in five at-bats, hitting safely four times, scoring three times and driving in three runs. Brady DeStigter had three hits, and Drew Sweeter and Jared Fodness had two hits apiece among the Lennox club's 15 base knocks off McDonald and Husby.
