Red Sox dodge rain, defeat
Garretson Sunday By Parker Knox
Sportswriter After a late-inning 4-2 loss at Yankton last Thursday, the Vermillion Red Sox dodged Sunday's rainstorms to post a 9-6 win at Garretson. Manager Kirk Sorenson's Red Sox are scheduled to play the Sioux City Saints at home Sunday night, then go to Canton next Wednesday, June 17. The Red Sox scored twice in the second inning at Yankton. A bases-loaded walk to Dan Hansen plated one run, and Jim McNaughton's RBI single scored the other. The Tappers, however, also scored twice on errors, one in the first and one in the fifth, so the game stayed 2-2 until the eighth. Yankton got a single by Rick Huston to take a 3-2 lead and made it a two-run margin on a bases-loaded walk to Kyle Smith. Besides McNaughton's hit, a Ben Oberle single was the only other Red Sox hit. Tom Alessio pitched six innings for Vermillion, allowing only the two unearned runs. Casey Newman relieved in the seventh. Brad Donovan pitched a complete game at Garretson. Though he allowed 10 hits, he struck out 12. The Red Sox blew open a 2-1 game with a seven-run eighth. Garretson made it interesting with five runs in the ninth. Robin Chute slugged a home run, single and double and drove in two runs for the Red Sox. Dan Hansen had two hits.
