Red Sox ranked fifth in amateur baseball poll By Parker Knox
Sportswriter The Vermillion Red Sox improved their record to 6-3 with a four-game winning streak last week and continued to be ranked fifth in the statewide Class "A" amateur baseball poll. A doubleheader sweep over the Sioux City Saints at Prentis Park completed the all-victorious week. Dan Hansen's single in the bottom of the ninth scored Colby Lessmann to break a 5-5 tie and beat the Saints in the twinbill opener, 6-5. Hansen, Lessmann, Robin Chute and Brad Donovan slugged doubles for the Red Sox, who were outhit 11-9. Corky McLaughlin threw until being relieved by Garrett Linhardt in the sixth. The nightcap went to the Sox by a 4-1 count. Jim McNaughton contributed a home run while Lessmann and Donovan again had doubles among the Vermillion team's six total hits. Jared Heidesch pitched a full-game seven innings, allowing just the single run. Earlier last week the Red Sox took Elk Point to the woodshed, 19-4, outhitting the visitors 17-7. Cody Davis had a triple. Ian Ybarrara had four hits, Chute and Hansen had three hits apiece, including a double each, and Lessmann also hit a double. Linhardt was the starter and winner on the mound for the Sox. Kasey Neuman entered the game in relief in the sixth. The Red Sox will host the Akron Rebels at 2 p.m. Sunday, then take on the Vermillion Grey Sox at 7:30 next Wednesday.
