Century Farm deadline Aug. 20 The deadline for Century Farm recognition at the SD State Fair is fast approaching. All applications are due to the South Dakota Farm Bureau (SDFB) office by Aug. 20. The Century Farm ceremony is a joint program of the SDFB and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture (SDDA). A farm or ranch is eligible for recognition if at least 80 acres of original land has been continuously owned by the same family for 100 years or longer. "South Dakota has a rich agricultural tradition," said Secretary of Agriculture Bill Even. "Being part of a Century Farm is a special accomplishment that demonstrates a continued commitment to agriculture and our rural way of life." The ceremony at the 2009 State Fair will recognize those Century Farms that have not been previously honored. To date, almost 2,100 farms and ranches have been recognized statewide. Application forms can be obtained by calling the SDFB office at 605-353-8052, or by contacting SDDA at 605-773-3375. All forms must be completed and notarized before being returned to the SDFB office, PO Box 1426, Huron, SD 57350. Application forms can also be found on the SDFB Web site at www.sdfbf.org or the SDDA site at www.state.sd.us/doa/.
