This Week in Greysox Baseball

This Week in Greysox Baseball By Joe "MOJO" Reiser Thursday July, 2, the Dakota Valley baseball/softball complex was the scene as the Vermillion Greysox drubbed the Sioux City Pilots by the score of 12-3. Winning pitcher, Ryan Baedke scattered eight hits and struck out eight batters in a complete game performance. Reid Meierkort led the Greysox offense with a 5 for 5 night at the plate, scoring three runs. Brett Mockler had a 3 for 5 night at the plate, driving in two runs and flashing some fine leather from his third base position. Mockler soared in the air as he robbed the Pilots of extra bases and extra runs, snagging a line shot from the bat of Jerry Guget. Fireworks exploded in the holiday sky as second baseman, Aaron Baedke delivered a two hit, two RBI night with a ninth inning, two run blast to left field. Ryan Baedke assisted the Greysox cause with the bat as well, with two hits and three runs scored. "It was a tough night in the field for both teams, the defense was fine, but the mosquitoes were hungry," said left fielder Travis Lee. "I am pretty sure both teams donated a lot of blood," added shortstop Kyle Mollet. The 5 for 5 performance by Reid Meierkort earned him the prestigious "Budlight Player of the Game" award. Catcher Jarrod Freidel was sighted for his defense from behind the plate. For the Sioux City Pilots, Wes Bowman banged out a double and two singles and was assisted by Andrew Cork, who uncorked two doubles and a single. Pat Diekman took the loss for the hometown team, giving way to reliever Bet Wager in the sixth inning. The Greysox team's next action is Wednesday, July 8 at Prentis Park against Canton, for a 7 p.m. start.  On Sunday, July 12, the Elk Point Stags bring former Coyote greats, Brooks and Dustin Little to Prentis Park for a 7 p.m. game. On Wednesday, July 15, the Greysox hit the road to Akron, IA for another 7 p.m. start against the Rebels. Well, that's about it folks. July is the month for polishing up the bats and oiling up the gloves, as the Greysox make a drive for the playoffs. I urge you to come out and enjoy a game of hardball. Until next week, I will see you from the crow's nest. Thanks, MOJO
