Vermillion must compete in ?play-in? By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Vermillion's Post 1 American Legion team took an impressive 20-6 record into its final three regular-season games this week against Freeman and Yankton, and now suddenly it's tournament time. If seeding had a bearing on the pairings for American Legion regionals, Post 1 would surely have the top seed in the local regional, but things still go by the luck of the draw in Legion baseball. For that reason Vermillion has to compete in a "play-in" game at 11 a.m. Saturday against Dakota Valley when the regional gets underway in Lennox. The winner of that game takes on Harrisburg at 5 p.m. Saturday. The other first-round game pits Elk Point against Lennox. The victors in those two games will collide in the winner's bracket game at 5 p.m. Sunday. Meanwhile, everybody else will have been playing elimination games in the double-elimination format. Whoever is still alive will play for the regional title at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and another championship game, if necessary, will immediately follow that night. The regional champ advances to the state "B" tournament at Platte on July 22-26. The champion there out of the field of seven regional winners and host Platte gets to play with seven "A" American Legion teams in the state championship tournament at Rapid City's Fitzgerald Stadium starting July 29. Vermillion's 11-game winning streak came to an end in Sioux Falls last Wednesday when Post 15 East dealt Post 1 a double defeat, 8-2 and 16-1. It was one of those nights, according to Coach Jason Gault, when the opponents were able to hit almost everything in sight. At the same time Post 1 made a few mistakes of which Post 15 East was able to take advantage. Of the six Vermillion defeats heading into this week's games against Freeman and Yankton, three have been at the hands of Sioux Falls East. Post 1 lost twice to Sioux Falls West and once to Spearfish. Meanwhile, among the 20 victories were two wins over West and one over East. Against the other teams within this regional, Vermillion went 1-0 against Lennox, 3-0 against Elk Point and 2-0 against Harrisburg. Post 1 has not faced its opening opponent, Dakota Valley.
