Vermillion Red Sox
enter postseason play By Parker Knox
Sportswriter Postseason play has begun for the Vermillion Red Sox in Class "A" amateur baseball. The Sox played Brandon Valley on Tuesday night in Yankton, and, whether they won or lost, they play again in Yankton on Saturday as the district tournament continues. The Red Sox concluded regular-season play with a pair of games last week, losing to the Yankton Tappers, 7-4, and whipping the Sioux City Saints, 11-1. Colby Lessmann stroked three of the seven Red Sox hits against Yankton, but the Tappers had 11 base knocks, and a four-run sixth was their big inning. Garrett Linhardt struck out six in pitching the first five innings for Vermillion. Brad Donovan finished up, fanning three in his four stanzas of work on the mound. Against the Saints a four-run fourth gave the Sox a big lead, and a four-run seventh finished it off via the 10-run rule. Lessmann had a home run and a double, and Jim McNaughton and Ian Ybarra each had a double. Thomas Alessio shut down the Sioux City club on two hits, striking out four in his seven-inning complete-game pitching performance.
