Vermillion Sesquicentennial Events 2009! The Main Sesquicentennial Celebration dates are Aug. 6 – 9: Thursday, Aug. 6: 7:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. – Self guided tours of the new Muenster University Center. 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. – Tours of the new USD Medical School. 0:30 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 5 p.m. – Tours of the new City Hall at 25 Center St. 4:30 to 7 p.m. – Free Community BBQ in Prentis Park.  Pork loin meal with 150th birthday cake. Everyone welcome! 7:30 p.m. – Ratingen Youth Wind Orchestra from Sister City Ratingen, Germany will perform a free public band concert at the Vermillion High School. Friday, Aug. 7: 12 to 3 p.m. – University High School will meet for a luncheon at the Vermillion Public Library. 1 to 5 p.m. – All School Reunion Reception at the VHS Commons.  Members of VHS Show Choir "Rhythm in Red" will be available to give tours of VHS. Various individual VHS class gatherings will be held around the community and at the Eagles Club in the evening. Sunday, Aug. 9: 8 a.m. to noon – Fly-in Breakfast at Vermillion Airport.  The Lions Club will be serving pancakes for a donation to the Senior Citizens Center. 9:30 a.m. – Ribbon Cutting and Dedication of the new concrete airport runway.  The new runway will be dedicated in honor of current airport manager and long time Vermillion and USD pilot Denny Martens. 9:59 a.m. -Fighter jets, SD Air National Guard 114th Fighter Wing Flyover at Vermillion Airport. 10 to 11 a.m. – Free Air Show with aerobatic pilots and maneuvers at Vermillion Airport. 1 to 3 p.m. – Vermillion Cemetery Association Open House at the "Little Red Chapel" at Bluff View Cemetery. 7 p.m. – A Celebration of our Spiritual Heritage – Free Ecumenical Concert and Worship Service at Vermillion High School.   This Weeks Happenings! National Music Museum's Brown Bag Lunch Program will feature "Professors Polka Party," a selection of professional friends from the USD Department of Music from 12:05 to 12:55 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7. Next Weeks Happenings! Senior Center 40th Anniversary Open House is Wednesday, Aug. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Citizen Center at 320 W. Main St.  Open to the public! Clay County Fair & Achievement Days is Aug. 13-15. The fair kicks off on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 4 p.m. There is something for everyone including a Demolition Derby, ATV races, kid's crafts and games, water fights, car show, live entertainment and much more!  Check it out at Youth Concert Night, with free music, pizza and pop for highschoolers is at the Grace Baptist Church (across from VHS) on Thursday, Aug. 13 from 8 to 10 p.m. The 12th Annual Big Friend-Little Friend bike ride to raise funds for their Youth Mentoring Program is Saturday, Aug. 15 at the former National Guard Armory in Elk Point. Second Annual Hy-Vee Scramble for SESDAC is Aug. 17, noon registration with a 1 p.m. shot gun start.  Four person best shot at The Bluffs Golf Course. Reserve your team early, this will sell out fast!  Payouts to three flights, tournament champion team wins $400. Last year this event raised over $15,300 for the SESDAC Foundation.  Corporate sponsors are Hy-Vee, Budweiser, KVHT and The Broadcaster Press. Bull-A-Rama is Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 28-30.  There will be bulls, bull fighters, clowns, bull riders and more at the Clay County Park Rodeo Grounds! Great Dakota Wine Fest is at Buffalo Run Resort/Valiant Vineyards on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29 & 30.  Live music, wine tasting and more! Monarch Migration is Thursday, Sept. 10 at Spirit Mound, at 6:30 p.m.  Monarch butterflies make an incredible journey to Mexico in the fall.  Participants will learn about Monarch's migration pattern and help with the research project along the meandering trail to the summit of Spirit Mound, six miles north of Vermillion on Hwy 19.  It's free and fun for the whole family!  For more information go to or call 605-232-0873.
