This Week in Greysox Baseball By Joe â�?�?MOJOâ�? Reiser Hi again folks, it's state tourney time for the Vermillion Greysox. The Greysox won a berth in the South Dakota State Amateur Tourney with a second place finish in the District 7 Tourney in Larchwood, IA. August 6 at 5:30 p.m. the "Gang in Grey" hits Cadwell Park in Mitchell for a first round battle against Mt. Vernon. The Greysox road to Mitchell went through a tough State Line League champion Larchwood. The Greysox defeated Larchwood 9- 4 set up a championship game against the Garretson Jays. On Tuesday, July, 28 in Larchwood, the Greysox dropped the championship game to Garretson by the score of 10-4. The Grey got things going early by knocking four hits and scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The Garretson pitchers would shut down the scoring of the Greysox by allowing only six more hits for the rest of the game. A solo blast from the bat of Shae Williams would be the only score in the final eight innings. Williams drove in three runs on a single and the homer, to lead the Greysox and was awarded the "Bud Light Player of the Game." Reid Meierkort chipped in with a double and two singles and one RBI. Catcher Jason Dietrich also had two singles. Rusty Jensen pitched six innings and took the loss, Ryan Bak handled mop-up duties. For the Jays, Austin VanHove was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Will Junke and Sam Johnson. Nick Bonte slapped three singles and scored three runs. Luke Johnson had a single , a home run and two runs scored. The Jays offense scored in seven of the eight innings they came to bat. So, it's on to the state tourney for four of the teams from District 7. Akron, IA faced Martin on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. Larchwood takes on the Canova "Gang" on Friday, Aug. 7 at 11 a.m., with Garretson coming up against Tabor on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 1 p.m. When the Greysox hit the field on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m., we will be getting a hand from the State Champion American Legion Post 1 Team. Tyler Johnson, Cory Taggart, Kyle Nemec, JR Moore, Sam McBride, Jason Rasmussen and Andrew Eidem will join the Greysox in ready reserve. Other pickup players include Brooks Little from Elk Point, along with Thad Meister and Devin Skyles of Canton. The dugout will be full as the Greysox prepare for battle against a very good Mt.Vernon team. It would be nice if some of you folks can get out to Mitchell and cheer on your local team.
