The third weekend of the high school soccer season will find three home games for Vermillion varsity teams, starting with a boys game against Douglas at 6 p.m. Friday at Cotton Field.
Both girls and boys varsity clubs will host Belle Fourche on Saturday with the girls playing at 11 a.m. and the boys at 1 p.m.
The Tanager boys, on a Black Hills trip last weekend, lost at undefeated Hot Springs, 2-0, but responded the next day with a 2-2 tie at Custer against an undefeated team that hadn't been scored on in three previous contests.
Monday night the Tanagers lost a 6-1 decision at Harrisburg and now stand at 1-2-1 on the season. If they play well this weekend, they might have a shot at a pair of victories because Douglas is 0-2, having been outscored 13-0, and Belle Fourche is 0-3 and has been outscored 19-1.
Meanwhile, the Tanager girls varsity picked up their initial win of the season at home Saturday, pulling away from Mitchell in the second half, 5-2. Last week the girls had lost at West Central, 5-0, and Monday night the Tanagers lost at Harrisburg 5-0 and are now 1-3-0.
The Belle team that comes to town Saturday morning comes with a 2-0 record, having defeated Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Christian.
In the second half Erickson scored once and Hannah Nehlich-Arobba twice along with two assists to put the victory in the bag.
In goal Katie Wasley was strong with five saves.
At Harrisburg "we played them very tough for the first 20 minutes," said Coach Dave LaCombe. "After that they seemed to open up their offense."
Wasley continued to show her potential in the goalkeeper position with 12 saves against the Tigers.
