The Tanager girls tennis team, after going 1-6 to open their rugged schedule against primarily large-school squads, picked up three dual wins out of seven matches over a five-day span last week.
Vermillion won a dual at Madison, 6-3. Kayla Munger, Kasey Nielsen, Dylan Daniels and Kelly Nielsen earned singles victories while the doubles teams of Claire Jones/ Lindsay Robinet and Daniels/ Kelly Nielsen won their matches.
A triangular at Yankton saw the Tanagers lose a 9-0 match to the host Gazelles but sweep a 7-0 dual with Todd County. Claire Jones, Munger, Robinet, Kasey Nielsen and Daniels won singles matches. The Jones/Munger and Robinet/Kasey Nielsen doubles teams also were victorious against the Falcons.
At Brandon Valley's quadrangular Vermillion scored a 6-3 triumph over Spearfish. The Tanagers swept through the 4-5-6 singles slots with the Nielsens and Daniels scoring wins, and all three doubles duos won close, tense matches. Jones/Munger won 11-9, Robinet/Kasey Nielsen won 10-8, and Daniels/Kelly Nielsen also won 10-8. The Tanagers lost a 5-4 dual with Luverne, MN, despite singles wins by Jones, Munger and Kasey Nielsen and a doubles victory by Jones/Munger.
Vermillion also lost a 9-0 decision to Rapid City Stevens and an 8-1 dual to Brandon Valley. In the latter contest the Tanager point came from Jones' win at No. 1 singles.
Only three weekends remain in the regular season. The Tanagers are now idle until next Thursday when they go to Sioux Falls O'Gorman for a dual. The final home dual of the year will be Sept. 28 against Mitchell.
