Vermillion's volleyball squad finished the first two weekends of the season with a 2-2 record after defeating Lennox and Todd County and losing to South Sioux City in duals last week.
The Tanagers go to Luverne, MN, Saturday for that school's invitational. Coach Lenni Billberg called the Lennox and Todd County matches "a great chance for us to iron out some kinks, work on our offense and serve tough."
Billberg said that defensively her team is starting to "put the pieces together to become a true force."
VHS won over Lennox by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-16 and trimmed Todd County in 25-17, 25-11 and 25-12 games. Against the Orioles, Sierra Allen led in kills with six. Elise Hughes-Berheim had 13 digs, Kylie Fischbach 16 assists, and Jenny Bye and Michelle Blythe three kills each.
Fischbach led the assault against Todd County with 17 assists and eight digs. Allen again had six kills, Lizzy Bye five kills and five digs, Blythe four kills and eight digs and Hughes-Berheim eight digs.
At South Sioux City the Tanagers took a 1-0 lead with a 25-21 win, then lost by 25-15, 25-22 and 25-16 in the next three games.
"While victory was not ours, we looked and felt the best we have thus far in the early season," Billberg said. "Our passing was much improved, and our blocking dominated a very skilled Cardinal team."
Allen registered eight kills, Hughes-Berheim 19 digs, Jenny Bye six kills, Blythe five kills, Ashley Ouellette five kills and Molly LeCates 16 assists.
"Jenny Bye also had her best game of the season finding a way to get her hands on a lot of tough-to-get balls," Billberg added.
