This Week in Vermillion High School Boys Golf

Monday, Sept. 15 saw the Elk Point/Jefferson Boys' golf team arrive at the "Bluffs" in Vermillion for a golf match. The Tanagers flexed their collective muscles and soundly defeated the Huskies. The local lads rolled in a team total of 154 to a 186 total for the Elk Point/Jefferson team. Low scoring honors went to the hot shooting Cole Andre at 37. Next low were the tandem of Mitch Nelson and Zack McDonald who bagged a pair of 38's. Rounding out the field for the Tanagers were Aaron Steele and Erik Ustad who both fired a 41. These were some nice scores with marked improvement coming from Zack McDonald. The EPJ team was lead by Sam Viereck at 40, followed by Steven Gross at 43. In the JV match Carter Andre fired a 41 followed by a 49 from Owen Korcuska. Patrick Haught and Mitch Ellison both banged out 50's to give the JV's a 190 score and a large victory margin.

Friday, Sept. 18 our fearless Tanagers took the course at Elk Point for the EPJ Husky Invite. Sioux Falls Christian won the team event with a score of 317 and the Vermillion boys finished second at 320. Third place was Dell Rapids at 330, Canton and Dakota Valley tied for fourth at 331. Tea Area finished in sixth at 343, Harrisburg finished in seventh at 355. Wagner, EPJ, and Beresford closed out the team event with some astronomical scores. Low scorer for the tourney was Colin Karst of Dells with a 74. Taylor White of Dakota Valley slid into second with a 75 and third was taken by Jon Vant Hul also with a 75. Cole Andre took home fourth place finish with a 78. Other Tanager scores were Aaron Steele and Zack McDonald at 80, Erik Ustad at 82 and Mitch Nelson at 86. Overall a nice showing by the tough Tanager team.  On the JV side of the ledger, Patrick Haught finished second with a 41 and Carter Andre landed in sixth with a 44.

It looks like the scores are getting lower for our local boys. As these young men hit the "Bluffs" on Tuesday the 22nd, they will have their sights set on a "Big 8" conference title. Here comes tourney time folks. Let's all keep our fingers crossed and hope these fine young men can continue playing great golf and bring home some titles.

"I will see you from the rough where I will be looking for my ball" … until next week … thanks MOJO.
