USD Students volunteer during National Day of Service

Sixteen students from The University of South Dakota recently served more than 165 people at the Vermillion Welcome Table in honor of the Sept. 11 National Day of Service.

The Welcome Table is just one of USD's Center for Academic Engagement (CAE) alternative events of service for students to connect classroom learning with community participation. In addition to honoring Sept. 11, the Welcome Table event included fire safety programming. The program was organized by CAE and closed with a reflection led by AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America members Brittany VanHove and Doni Gustafson, who are working in the CAE office through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Students participating in the Welcome Table event said they really enjoyed their experience and felt it was a necessary organization for the Vermillion community, including Danielle Sieck, an undergraduate student from Selby, who described the experience as "fun, especially working with fellow students to help out the community of Vermillion."

In addition to Sieck, students volunteering for at the Vermillion Welcome Table for the National Day of Service included Shane Bryan of Chamberlain, Antonia Barrera of Fremont, NE, Andrea VanHove of Marion, Monique Ellefson and Jessie Milstead of Sioux Falls, Kelsey Wickre of Veblen, Jes Colburn of Aurora, NE, Angela Helseth of Brandon, Abbey Jones of Watertown, Justin Kloster, Hillarie Maddox and Jami Buttke of Vermillion, Luke Putnam of Rapid City, Katie Ekeren of Yankton, and Steven Harding of Jefferson.
