Luella J. Bertrand

Funeral Mass for Luella J. Bertrand of Scotland was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at St. George Catholic Church in Scotland with Fr. Mathew Vazhappilly as Celebrant. Organist was Georgianne Pravecek, with vocal music provided by the St. George Choir and Jeremy Bertrand as soloist.

 

Interment took place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the BluffView Cemetery, Vermillion. Honorary casketbearers are Luella's great-great-grandchildren and active casketbearers are her great-grandchildren. Visitation was held on Tuesday from 3 until 5:30 p.m. at the Goglin Funeral Home in Scotland. There was a wake service on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at the church. Luella J. Bertrand was born on Saturday, Feb. 19, 1916  at Wakonda to Lars and Jennie (Johanson) Christenson. She graduated from Wakonda High School. Luella was united in marriage to Albert Bertrand on Jan. 12, 1937. He opened the Gamble's Store in Scotland in 1950 and she ran Luella's Dress Shop in the mid-50s.  

 

In 1957, they moved to Vermillion where they ran Al's Real Estate together. They retired to Scotland in 1990, living in the Westwinds Apartments. Luella enjoyed playing all kinds of card games, especially Bridge, and working on word puzzles. She especially enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was a member of St. George Catholic Church.

 

Luella passed away on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009 at the Scotland Good Samaritan Society at the age of 93 years, 8 months and 6 days.

 

Luella's memory will be cherished by her son, Wayne (Mary Jo) Bertrand of Scotland; three grandchildren, Kim (Marlin) Kocourek of Scotland, Michele (Tony) Kunkel of Yankton, and Kris (Richard) Pechous of Tabor; eight great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

 

Preceding her in death were her husband, Albert; an infant son, Robert; a grandson, Robert Wayne; brothers, Edward, Harold, Leonard, and Robert; and a sister, Esther.
