Rolfe, Hoffman win three events each to lead Coyote swimming and diving teams against UND

Terry Rolfe and Elizabeth Hoffman won three events each to lead The University of South Dakota swimming and diving teams in their season opener against rival North Dakota Saturday in Vermillion.

Rolfe won three events for the USD men, who fell 145-135 to the Sioux, while Hoffman won three events for the USD women, who fell in the dual 177-125.

The USD men enjoyed a strong 2009-10 debut, winning eight events.

Rolfe (So., Newcastle, WY) won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 1:59.61, just edging George Philbin of North Dakota by .10 seconds. Rolfe also won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.92 and added a win in the 200 IM (2:14.10).

Thad Stoddard (So., Douglas, WY) also had a big day for the USD men, as he won the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 59.30 and added a win in the 100 freestyle (54.02). Also winning two events for USD was Chris Hause (So., Overland Park, KS), who won the 1-meter diving with a score of 2:18.10 and also won the 3-meter diving at 248.50.

Nick Challgren (Fr., Cedar Falls, IA) edged teammate Matt Weyer (So., Taos, NM) to win the 800-meter freestyle. Challgren finished with a time of 9:13.08, while Weyer was at 9:13.12. Weyer was second in the 400 freestyle at 4:26.88.

Bridger Miller (Jr., Upton, WY) was second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:11.46, while Ray Wieser (Jr., Vacaville, CA) was second in the 200 butterfly (2:21.09). Dane Van Arkel (So., Colorado Springs, CO) was second in the 50 freestyle at 24.96. Wieser was also second in the 200 breaststroke at 2:39.37.

In the 200 meter relay, USD was second at 1:50.23.

For the USD women, Hoffman picked up where she left off during her freshman season.

Hoffman (So., Eureka) won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:10.49 and the 400 freestyle at 4:38.54. Hoffman also added a win in the 200 IM at 2:30.18, topping teammate Sallie Collins for the win. Collins was at 2:33.40.

USD's 200 freestyle relay won with a time of 1:55.48. That relay consisted of Kaitlyn Jefferson (Fr., Westland, MI), Rita Buschbacher (Jr., Brighton, MI), Danielle Bolin (Sr., Norfolk, NE) and Emily Connelly (Sr., Lincoln, NE).

Kayla Smith (So., Woodbury, MN) was second in the 100 breaststroke at 1:18.33, while Shannon Moceri (So., South Lyon, MI) was third at 1:20.01. Smith also was third in the 200 breaststroke at 2:57.84.

In the 50 freestyle, Jefferson enjoyed a strong Coyote debut, placing second in the 50 freestyle at 28.29. Jefferson was also third in the 100 freestyle (1:02.12). Jackie Kahnke (Fr., Shakopee, MN) was third in the 800 freestyle.

Hannah Roetzel (Jr., Newcastle, WY) won the 3-meter diving with an effort of 223.15.

Janine James (So., Cheyenne, WY) led the Coyote divers with a third-place finish with 206.40 points in 1-meter diving, while Katie Hines (Fr., West Des Moines, IA) was third in the 200 backstroke at 2:33.64. USD's 200 medley relay was also third at 2:06.10.

The Coyote teams resume action on Friday, Oct. 23 at the Gillette Invitational hosted by the University of Wyoming. The two-day meet begins Friday at 5 p.m. in Gillette, WY.
