Thad Stoddard's two event wins highlighted the final day of action for The University of South Dakota swimming and diving teams at the Gillette Invitational in Gillette, WY, on Saturday.
In the second day of dual competition, the USD men fell to Wyoming (126-71) and North Dakota (118.5-67.5), while the USD women fell to Wyoming (139-64) and North Dakota (149-56).
Despite the losses, there were several solid performances for both Coyote teams.
Stoddard (So., Douglas, WY) continues his fast start to 2009-10. He won the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.74, edging Jamie Comrie of Wyoming by just .02 seconds. Stoddard also recorded a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 52.74 to record the Coyotes' only two wins of the day.
Terry Rolfe (So., Newcastle, WY) posted a solid second-place finish in the 400 IM, finishing with a time of 4:27.46.
Dane VanArkel (So., Colorado Springs, CO) was third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.94, with Ray Wieser (Jr., Vacaville, CA) finishing third in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.32. Bridger Miller (Jr., Upton, WY) was fourth in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.38.
The USD men's 400 medley relay was fourth with a time of 3:39.49. That consisted of Stoddard, Miller, Taylor Adams (Fr., Highlands Ranch, CO) and Rolfe.
Matt Weyer (So., Taos, NM) was fourth in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:56, while Wieser was fourth in the 100 butterfly at 54.98. Gabe Sands (So., Greeley, CO) was fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.97.
For the USD women, Kayla Smith (So., Woodbury, MN) had a good showing in the 100 breaststroke. Smith was third with a time of 1:09.51, ahead of teammate Sallie Collins (Jr., Hastings, MN), who was fourth at 1:09.51. Shannon Moceri (So., South Lyon, MI) was fifth at 1:10.27.
USD's 400 freestyle relay was third at 3:46.08. That consisted of Elizabeth Hoffman (So., Eureka), Rita Buschbacher (Jr., Brighton, MI), Kaitlyn Jefferson (Fr., Westland, MI)and Danielle Bolin (Sr., Norfolk, NE).
Buschbacher was sixth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.58, while Meredith Howell (Sr., Lenexa, KS) was sixth in the 400 IM after swimming a time of 5:07.87.
The USD women will face Iowa State in a dual on Oct. 30, and follow with a home meet against Northern Iowa on Nov. 6. Both Coyote teams are in action on Nov. 7 at Nebraska.
