Tanager cross country experiences mix of satisfaction, disappointment

The 2009 season ended with satisfaction for three of Vermillion's qualifiers at the state cross country meet and extreme disappointment for the fourth.

"Everyone ran well, and we were pleased with their performances," said Coach Kelly Fischbach after the state meet ended in Rapid City Saturday.

Sophie Nehlich-Arobba, who will graduate this year, placed 39th in the girls' race in a time of 16:57.2.

A pair of juniors who qualified for the state boys' race, Alex Card and Robert Osterberg, placed 50th and 94th, respectively. Card ran in 18:42.0, and Osterberg's time was 19:23.0.

The other Vermillion qualifier, sophomore Blair Gilkyson, who had returned to action in mid-season after an earlier injury, became ill in Rapid City Friday night.  She still decided to try to run on Saturday and did indeed start the race. However, she had to drop out after about 1,000 meters.

"She was disappointed after working so hard to get back into competition," Fischbach said.
