Dorene M. Waltman-Dempster, age 85, formerly of Pierre, and Sandy, OR, died from lung cancer on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009 at her home in Vermillion.

Funeral services were 2 p.m., on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the First Baptist Church in Vermillion, with Pastor Sandy Aakre officiating. Inurnment was at 3 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 4 in the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m., on Monday, at the First Baptist Church in Vermillion. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.

Pallbearers are her grandchildren.

Dorene, the fourth child of John and Ethel (Lewis) Weiland, was born in Faulkton on April 6, 1924. She attended school in South Dakota, Nebraska and Wyoming. She married Carl W. Waltman on Aug. 4, 1942. The couple lived in Denver, CO where Carl was stationed at Ft. Logan. Later, they lived in Wyoming and then moved to the Piedmont-Rapid City area where they raised three daughters. Dorene, who loved to sew, designed and sewed clothing for her daughters. She was an avid reader and taught her daughters to love reading as well. She loved classical music but also enjoyed square dancing and the polka. She was well known for her delicious pies, homemade bread and homemade jellies. In 1963, Dorene and Carl moved to Pierre, where Dorene added the hobbies of finishing the furniture and cabinet work constructed by Carl. She learned the fine art of using a Danish oil finish and applied it to many pieces of furniture. Dorene had a deep abiding faith and attended the First Baptist Church in Pierre.

Following Carl's death, Dorene married Darrell C. Dempster of Sandy, OR on June 26, 1999. The couple managed a bed and breakfast for a few years then in retirement spent many happy years traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia.  They particularly enjoyed visiting the many children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren of their blended families. Following Darrell's death, Dorene moved back to South Dakota, living in Pierre and then Vermillion where she was close to her daughters.

Honored to have shared her life are daughters, Linda (Tim) Tibbs of Pierre and Cheryl Hill of Vermillion; Darrell's children, Kathy (Bill) Fujikawa of Escondido, CA, Judy (David) Stepp of Salem, OR, Diane Dempster (Chris Radke) of Seattle, WA, and Mike Dempster of Wilsonville, OR; Darrell's stepchildren; 11 grandchildren who she was particularly proud of, Tedd, Tony, Dulcey, Jon, Sarah, Matt, Josh, Barak, Alan, Karen and Shari Lynn; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Dorene was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Carl Waltman and Darrell Dempster; daughter, Suzanne Klasi; two brothers, Earl and Leonard Weiland; and sister, Eleanor Land.
