The Vermillion High School Dance Inferno kicks off its winter season with their 8th Annual Holiday Dance Recital this weekend. The 16-member group will be performing 14 dances from a variety of musical genres. These performances include three routines highlighted during this fall's VHS football season, two new full-ensemble routines to be performed at upcoming VHS basketball games, and a variety of smaller group dances by Dance Inferno members. As tradition, the full group will also be performing their unique "glow dance" and a Christmas themed routine.
Guest performer junior Alex Card will present a tap duet with sophomore Dance Inferno member Krissy Zalud. A number of the dance team members have also been broadening their skills by learning an original lyrical dance choreographed and taught by U.Dance member and VHS Dance Inferno assistant coach Amy Mart. Lyrical dance focuses on expressing the text of a song through movement and includes slower, more free-flowing movement than many of the jazz and hip hop routines the dancers perform regularly. "Everything else we do is very sharp, but this dance is graceful," freshman Dance Inferno member Rory Tucker said. Mart is pleased with the dancers' abilities in the new style of dance. Mart said, "Even though the majority of the girls had never tried lyrical dance before, they picked up the style very easily. It is good for them to be exposed to different styles of dance and to expand their skills."
Don't miss the chance to watch the VHS Dance Inferno in action this weekend to help jump start the holiday season. Performances are on Friday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 5 at 1:30 p.m. at the VHS Auditorium. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
