Duane LeMoyne Iverson was delivered into his mother's arms on Dec. 25, 1928 by Santa Claus, he once said. He left this earth with Jesus on Dec. 21, 2009 just four days before his 81st birthday. His wife Irene and daughter Glenda were at his side, in Palm Desert, CA. Granddaughter Alicia greeted him at heaven's gates where he also joined his parents and his three brothers.
Duane, the son of Lewis C. and Georgia Iverson, grew up in rural Norway Township where he attended Lincoln School. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1946. He married Irene Catherine Danielson on Oct. 17, 1948 at the Bergen Lutheran Church, having known her in elementary school, high school, and at church. Duane lived and farmed in rural Clay County until 1954 when he began work for the University of South Dakota in the Microbiology Department at the Lee Medical School. He worked there for nearly 37 years, until his retirement in 1991.
Duane was talented in so many different fields always tinkering with something in need of repair. He was able to fix just about anything both at home and at work. He took numerous correspondence courses or was self-taught in electronics, television and radio repair, refrigeration, and air conditioning. He enjoyed carpentry and built the home he and Irene shared for 30 years before moving to Palm Desert, CA in 1998.
Duane was a wonderful storyteller regaling his children with stories of his childhood, his extended family, and people and events of long ago Vermillion. In his spare time he enjoyed working in his garden in Vermillion or creating lovely pieces of handiwork. He and Irene travelled extensively in their later years, spending many winters in California where they eventually retired. Duane was someone who cared about others and was always willing to help them.
His memory will be cherished by his wife, Irene, of 61 years; his children, Cinda Lee (Raymond) Passick of Vermillion, Sharla (Craig) Nissen of Byron, MN, Rick Iverson of Volin, Glenda Iverson (Jerris Miles) of Yankton, and Kevin (Kaye) Iverson of Rapid City; grandchildren Chad (Kirsten) Passick, Erin (Marc) Larson, Adam (Deborah) Passick, Rene (Steve) Millner, Donell (Erick) Nolting, Derek Iverson, Tess Iverson; step-grandchildren Danielle (Dale) Gray and Justin (Laura) Miles; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Alicia Kaye Iverson; and his brothers, Leo, Jerome, and Daryl.
A memorial service will be held on Jan. 4, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion and in the Tower of Hope at the Crystal Cathedral on Jan. 14, 2010 at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Crystal Cathedral Garden of Peace in Garden Grove, CA.
