E. Don "Doc" McCullough, 94, of Vermillion, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010 at Sanford Vermillion Hospital.
E. Don McCullough was born Oct. 4, 1915 to Earl D. & Florence (Doty) McCullough in Columbus, OH. He grew up in Ohio and attended Ohio State University. He later attended the University of Alabama to attain his masters degree in health & physical education, then returned to Ohio State University for his doctorate degree. "Doc" was a longtime professor and coach at the University of South Dakota. He was the founder of the Vermillion Swim Club in the late 1960s and later established the USD Swim Team.
After retirement, "Doc" went back to Master Swimming and held many national and world records. Wherever he went, he established a swim and/or gymnastic team. He loved to travel after his retirement and "Doc" also enjoyed scuba diving and snorkeling.
He married the love of his life Elizabeth Wilson on June 30, 1941 in Columbus, OH.
He is survived by his loving wife, Betty, of Vermillion; two wonderful children, Jim (Katherine Mayer) McCullough of Austin, TX and Betsy (Todd) Connelly, Gardnerville, NV. Also a granddaughter, Kelly (Kris) Garry of Lake Havasu City, AZ, and a great-granddaughter, Ashlynn Garry, and grandson, Brian Connelly of Gardnerville, NV.
Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.
