Local Lions Club celebrates 60 years

The W.H. Over Museum was the setting for the Vermillion Lions Club 60th anniversary celebration held on last Thursday, Jan. 21.

The event marking the beginning of a year-long celebration was well attended by local members, spouses, and regional Lions Club dignitaries. A catered meal, followed by award presentations and a business meeting was the agenda for the evening.

"We are truly proud to be a part of a great local organization like Lions Club that serves so many people in our community," remarked Club President Marie Anne Ben. "Our 60th anniversary exhibits the strength and commitment of our membership, as well as the community's continued need for our service over the years."

Established in 1950, the Vermillion Lions Club was sponsored by the Sioux City Lions, and was charged by Helen Keller to be Knights for the Blind. Sixty years later the Lions Club has expanded its focus to include sight, hearing, diabetes, youth, community, environment and disaster relief.

Two of its charter officers were Cedric Cummins and Phillips Crew. While 60 years have passed, many familiar names remain on the membership roster: Dr. William O. Farber was a charter member and Dr. Charles Estee has been a member for 59 years; Margaret Crew and Gloria Christopherson are second generation members; and Keith Joy's father is a member in another Lions Club.

Although many people recognize the Lions Club from its fundraising activity of serving pancakes, their motto "We Serve" mainly describes the club's volunteer and financial assistance aspects. "Helping individuals, families, organizations, and even world-wide relief efforts are all part of our 60 year history in Vermillion," remarked Club Secretary Randy Sullivan. "Giving back to those in need is the main reason many join the club."

The current membership roster shows the clubs diversity, consisting of professionals, farmers, business owners, professors, blue collar workers, students, retirees and others.
