Mervil A. Peterson passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Sanford hospital in Sioux Falls, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mervil was born on May 25, 1932, on the family farm 10 miles west of Viborg, to Adolph and Ida (Lee) Peterson. He attended grade schools at Lonestar and Lowell and graduated from Viborg High School in 1950, where he excelled and lettered in all sports. After graduating, he farmed with his family and helped with the neighbors farms as well. He married MaryAnn Styles in 1956 in Volin. He worked at the Sioux Alfalfa Mill in Meckling until picking up his trade in plumbing, eventually running his own business for many years; Pete's Plumbing and Heating.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and didn't hesitate to exchange experiences, trade jokes and tell stories. He had many talents and was well known for his generosity with his time. He would have helped anyone at anytime. He loved the game of baseball, fishing, playing cards and visiting. He cherished his grandchildren and talked about them with anyone who would listen. He will be missed dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Ida; three aunts, Ragna, Mathilda and Amanda; two uncles, Gilbert and Iver Lee; and two cousins, Doris Jensen and Mervin Eide.
He is survived by his daughter, DeAnn (David) DeJean of Fremont, NE; sons, Scott (Amy Fedoruk) Peterson of Aberdeen; Kevin (Christy) Peterson of Menomonie, WI; and Dennis Peterson of Hospers, IA; his grandchildren, Alexa and Nicholas DeJean and Kaden and Cole Peterson; brother, Harold (Joyce) Peterson of Viborg; three nephews, Brian, Drew and Tim Peterson; and cousin.
A celebration of life was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be sent to Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home, 402 E. Main St., Vermillion, SD, 57069. Condolences may be sent online at www.koberfuneralhome.com.
Say not in grief he is gone, but live in thankfulness that he was.
