The fourth annual Vermillion Heroes Behind the Badges ended with great success. The blood drive event held on Jan. 11 was a friendly competition between the Vermillion Law Enforcement and Vermillion Fire Department. The final tally was Vermillion Law Enforcement with 50 donation votes vs. Vermillion Fire Department with 31 donation votes.
During the blood drive donors could designate their donation to the department of their choice. The blood collected at the event helped local patients and saved up to 243 lives.
"This was a very well attended blood drive with life saving results," states Ken Versteeg, executive director, Community Blood Bank. "The winter months are the most challenging time of the year. The blood drive ensures there will be blood available for patients when the need arises."
Community Blood Bank and Sanford Vermillion Medical Center would like to thank the blood donors, law enforcement and the fire department for the life saving actions with the Heroes Behind the Badges blood drive. Community Blood Bank is the sole provider of blood and blood products to Sanford Vermillion Medical Center as well as 28 other local hospitals.
