Vermillion's wrestlers have to place no worse than fourth in their respective weight classes tonight in order to qualify for next week's state tournament at Aberdeen.
The Region 2A tournament is taking place at Brandon Valley High School. The Friday night final session starts at 6 p.m.
Last week the Tanagers completed their regular season with two additional dual victories – 57-22 over Sioux Falls Washington and 45-27 over Harrisburg – in a triangular at Washington's gym.
"Everybody looked healthy and wrestled really tough," said Coach Joe Delvaux. "Several of them realized this was their last duals of their high school careers."
Vermillion completed the regular season with a 19-3 record in dual matches, losing only to Canton twice and Adrian, MN, once. The Tanagers defeated West Central, Harrisburg and Akron-Westfield twice each and topped Brandon Valley, Lennox, Yankton, Norfolk, Madison, Tea Area, Bennington, Woodbury Central, Sioux City North, Crofton, Beresford, Dakota Valley and Washington once apiece.
In addition, Vermillion took championships in the Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Harrisburg tournaments and placed second to Sturgis in the Sioux Falls Lincoln meet.
