Rudolph Inman Abild, beloved husband of Lil (nee Vernon) passed away peacefully at Emerald Groves Assisted Living on March 7, 2010 at the age of 77. Born July 26, 1932 on the Hans Abild homestead farm in Clay County, SD to the late Inman and Ida Abild, Rudy attended elementary school at Rural-Pleasant Dell, graduated Wakonda High School in 1950, and attended the University of South Dakota from 1951-1954. In 1955 he was drafted into the U.S. Army and spent two years stationed at Arlington Heights, IL as a radar operator. He married Donna Hanisch of Humboldt, SD on Feb. 23, 1957. Together they raised five children. Donna preceded him in death on Feb. 22, 1993. On Jan. 4, 1997 he and Lil Vernon were married and they moved to Sun Lakes, AZ, a community they have both loved and shared with many dear friends.
Rudy worked for International Harvester Corporation for 37 years. Beginning his career with IHC in Sioux Falls, he moved numerous times with the company, primarily in the Midwestern states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois until he retired in Naperville, IL, a western suburb of Chicago, in 1998. Rudy loved his work and the people he worked with, remaining close friends with his co-workers at IHC despite the many relocations.
Rudy lived life to the fullest. He was a life-long member of the Elks, an avid tennis and bridge player, and a devoted western movie fan. He loved Country/Western music, bicycling with friends and family, and target shooting. Despite his professional work and travel schedule, he was happiest at family gatherings at the lake, pulling water skiers behind the boat and having a beer with his extended family. In his retired life, Rudy enjoyed traveling and cruising with Lil. His birthday celebrations were wonderful; always designed to bring family and friends together. He was a member of St. Steven's Catholic Church in Sun Lakes, where he was honored to serve as a Eucharistic Minister.
Rudy is survived by his wife Lil; daughters Debra (Ed) Schauberger, Kathleen (David) Winter, Lisa (Garth) Carter; sons Brian (Patricia) Abild, and Mark (Catherine) Abild; and brother Richard (Sally) Abild. He is also survived by Lil's children, Deborah Vernon, Bill (Brenda) Vernon, Mark (Karee) Vernon, and Linda Vernon, 18 grandchildren, and a host of beloved sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father and an enthusiastic "Poppa," with a quick smile and an infectious laugh. He will be greatly missed.
Mass of Christian Service was held at St. Stevens Catholic Church in Sun Lakes, AZ, Thursday March 11 at 11 a.m. A saying of the Rosary will precede the mass at 10:30 a.m. Burial and a memorial will follow at a later date in Naperville, IL.
