The University of South Dakota Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced today its "Share Your Sole" shoe drive has gathered more than 2,000 shoes. The collection will now be donated to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation through the Cheyenne River Youth project.
"We want to thank everyone who donated to this great cause," SAAC President Danielle Dornbusch said. "Coyote fans from all over reached out to help make this SAAC event a huge success. We appreciate the assistance in helping people in such need."
After receiving national media attention with a mention on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, the outpouring of support for the Cheyenne River Sioux was immense. Olbermann encouraged people to donate to the tribe through the South Dakota Community Foundation's website, which has raised more than $288,935 since the show aired. More than 1,040 people are now following the cause through the website.
SAAC is a group that serves as the Coyotes' voice for a variety of issues. Comprised of representatives from each team, the group meets biweekly to discuss issues and collaborate on events including community services projects.
