Cleo Marvin Christensen

Cleo Marvin Christensen, "Chris" passed away April 15, 2010 after a short battle with cancer.  He was born Nov. 24, 1935 in Coon Rapids, IA to Pete and Clara (Kult) Christensen.   

Chris served in the U. S. Navy on the USS Edmonds from 1953 to 1956. He graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1966 with a BA and MA in geology.  He was employed for 37 years as a geologist with the South Dakota Geological Survey and retired in 1997 as director of the Division of Geological Survey and State Geologist.  

He was an avid amateur "Ham" radio operator with the call sign ACøM.  He was a member of the PARC Radio Club and NW Florida DX group in Fort Walton Beach, as well as many ham radio clubs in South Dakota.  He enjoyed fishing, and belonged to the FWB Sailfish Club.  He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Community at Eglin Air Force Base.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Namanny Christensen in 1997 and an infant son, James Allen Christensen.

Chris married Carol McCoy Christensen in August of 2000 and moved from Vermillion to Fort Walton Beach, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; brother, Joe Christensen (Lois); sisters, Lorraine Wallace and Karen Christensen; four children, Kevin Christensen (Linda), Kelly Anderson (Bill), Karla Bauer (Mike), Kari Christensen; three step-children, Pamela Langdon (Tim), Jay Roth, Karen Heller (Jimmy); 12 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren along with many extended family members and many, many friends.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ft. Walton Beach on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 10 a.m.  Celebrant was Father Kenneth Beale.

Burial followed at 2 p.m. at Fort Barrancas NAS, Pensacola.  

Oh Lord, I humbly pray
that I may fish 'til my last day.
And when I am in the Lord's great landing net,
peacefully asleep, that I may be judged
big enough to keep.
