Members of the Vermillion Fire Department were hampered by strong, gusting winds as they worked to contain a fire that broke out in a residence located at the corner of National and High streets in Vermillion Tuesday evening. The fire was reported shortly after 5 p.m. The house's owner, Dave Thiesse, said two women who rented the residence were able to leave the building and were not injured. The house was filled with thick smoke, and while flames never broke through the walls or the roof, the fire clearly had spread through most rooms of the home, prompting firemen to climb the roof to gain access to the attic area. No further information about the fire was available at press time. (Photo by David Lias)
