The Vermillion High School baseball team was unable to take advantage of a perfect afternoon for baseball Sunday when the Lake Andes team forfeited its trip to Prentis Park.
That meant a 9-day gap during beautiful weather when the Tanagers didn't have a game although Coach Jason Gault arranged an extra game with Beresford for this past Wednesday. Then the Tanagers went to Dakota Valley last night for a non-league contest.
Tonight (Friday) VHS plays another Region 1 Eastern Division rival, Bon Homme, at Tabor in a 7 p.m. varsity game, preceded by a JV game at 5.
On the horizon is an important first meeting of the spring against what appears to be the top team in the Eastern Division. The Tanagers go next Wednesday to Beresford where the Watchdogs stand at 6-1 in games that count toward postseason seeding. They have beaten Bon Homme, Parkston, Dakota Valley, Corsica-Stickney-Armour and Wagner while splitting a doubleheader with Mount Vernon-Hanson-Ethan-Woonsocket.
The Tanagers, meanwhile, are 4-2 for seeding purposes with wins over Dakota Valley twice, Parkston and now Lake Andes as well as two losses to MVHEW.
Next Wednesday's games at Beresford start with the JVs at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7.
