Colleen F. Kaeberle

Colleen F. Kaeberle, age 64, of Brookings, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Memorial services were 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the United Church of Christ in Brookings. Visitations will be at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Colleen Faye Kaeberle was born Feb. 22, 1946, at Yankton, to Alfred Harold and Florence Jean (Beaty) Kaeberle. She attended Meckling grade school and graduated from Meckling High School in 1964.
At age 9, Colleen received a head injury from a horse fall. Seizure complications led to neurosurgery in 1965 when she was 19, which left her with a hemi-paresis and a worse seizure disorder than before. She bravely struggled with these disabilities the rest of her life. Following extended rehabilitation care at Mayo Clinic, Colleen lived in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. She returned to South Dakota in 1998, living at Meckling and Brookings. Colleen was a fun and loving woman with an adventuresome spirit. She enjoyed her many friends and acquaintances. She loved plants, music, sports, playing cards, and helping others. She had animal friends, and angel friends; she had a generous soul.

Grateful for having shared her life are her sisters, Kathleen Apland of Brookings, and Karen Kaeberle of Meckling; nephew, Stuart (Melissa) Apland of Brookings; niece, Sheila (Gary) Ottenbacher and William, of Aberdeen. Colleen had many close extended family and friends from her years in and out of disability programs. Colleen was preceded in death by her parents and several special friends she met in her life's journey. She will be missed.

The family deeply appreciates the support of Dr. Frank Howard of the Mayo Clinic; Dr. Quinoness and Ann Ginsler, P.A., St. Paul; Courage Center and David Sherwood, Minneapolis; The Epilepsy Foundation Home and staff at Minneapolis; Datons; Punky's; United Retirement Center Staff; NODA volunteers, Sanford Medical Center; and Dr. Ron Sontegard, Vancouver.
