Some of the local youth baseball teams will have already played games by the time Sunday arrives, but the official start to the Vermillion baseball season will be a holiday Sunday full of America's pastime at Prentis Park.
The Vermillion Baseball Association will host the 2010 Opening Day Celebration with a quartet of games, starting with the 13-14 Teeners vs. Elk Point-Jefferson at 11:30 a.m.
The 2 p.m. game will match the Vermillion Babe Ruth team against Yankton. The Babe Ruthers are 13 to 15 years old and comprise a team that is playing in the Yankton Babe Ruth League for the first time this summer.
The Opening Day celebration will continue at 4:30 p.m. when the 15-16 Teeners play EP-J. Bringing the whole day to a close will be the first home game of the year for the defending state Class "B" American Legion champions, Vermillion Post 1, against EP-J at 7 p.m.
Sunday's 11:30 a.m. game will be the season opener for Coach Jason Huska's 13-14 VFW Teeners. They will also play next week on Tuesday at Elk Point in a doubleheader at 6 and 8 p.m.
Bill Settles is coaching the 15-16 Teeners, and Sunday's game against EP-J will also be their season opener. They will also play next Tuesday at Sioux Falls Central at 6 p.m. and at home next Thursday at 6 p.m. against Tyndall.
