The track and field season for Vermillion High School has dwindled down to the last three meets of the season, and they are all major events on the schedule.
The Tanagers next go to the Big 8 Conference meet at Lennox next Thursday. Competition is set to begin at 3 p.m.
After that VHS athletes have the Region 4A meet hosted by Dakota Valley on May 20 and the state meet at Lennox and Sioux Falls on May 28-29.
To compete at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays, by far this state's premier meet of any season, is a thrill for any athlete, and to place there is even better. Vermillion had a pair of seventh-place relay teams there last weekend.
The Tanager boys' 1600-meter relay quartet was timed in 3:35.46 for its seventh-place finish. Running in red and white were Chris Sargent-Wilson, Aaron Ruhaak, Ryan Kost and Cody Olson.
The girls' medley squad was seventh in 4:32.08 with Christine Epping, Kayla Munger, Sarah Day and Blair Gilkyson carrying the baton.
O'Gorman High School hosted a meet at the same time for schools not participating at Howard Wood and for athletes from some schools who were at the bigger meet. Vermillion's girls medley team came out of that competition with a championship in their event in a winning time of 4:53.93.
Tanager girls' relay teams were also third in the 1600 in 4:57.09, sixth in the 400 in :57.70 and seventh in the 3200 in 11:12.10.
In individual boys' events at the O'Gorman track, Will Mart was Vermillion's top placer with a second in the discus at 132'2". Eric Storm placed seventh in the high jump at 5'5", and Nathan Ford was eighth in the 3200-meter run in 11:42.20.
Tanager boys relay teams were fifth in the 3200 event in 10:00.0 and seventh in the medley in 4:15.43.
