VERMILLION (AP) A candidate for mayor in Vermillion says he'll continue to run despite a recent drug arrest. And Nick Severson says he'll push for the legalization of marijuana if he's elected mayor.
The 27-year-old University of South Dakota senior says marijuana is freely traded, especially in a college town, and he wants to see that trade regulated. He says taxing marijuana could help pay for city services.
Severson is due in court May 11 on misdemeanor drug charges. He says people can call him a "pot-smoking mayor," but that doesn't define him.
City Council President Jack Powell is the other candidate for mayor. He declined to comment on Severson's drug arrest. He says he wants to continue the city's growth and attract more families and visitors to town.
