Thomas J. Green

Thomas J. Green, 74, a resident of San Antonio, TX passed away on May 5, 2010 peacefully, surrounded by his wife and two children. Thomas was born Feb. 6, 1936 in Pierre. His family lived in Presho until moving to Vermillion in 1942.

Thomas was baptized in the Methodist Church in Presho, and he was confirmed in the Methodist Church in Vermillion. He graduated from high school in Vermillion in 1954, and received his B.S. and Commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Field Artillery from the University of South Dakota in 1958. He spent six months of active duty in Ft. Sill, OK following his graduation from the university.   

He moved to Sioux Falls in 1959 and worked for Mpls. Honeywell.  He married Elizabeth Crandall of Sioux Falls in December of 1959 and returned to USD school of Law in 1961. He received his law degree (J.D.) in 1964, and the family moved to Watertown, where he joined the firm of Loucks, Oviatt, and Bradshaw. This law firm evolved into the firm of Green, Shulz, Roby Oviatt Cummings and Lindgren, LLP, and he became counsel to the firm in 2002. Thomas continued as counsel to the firm and practiced law on a part time basis until 2008.

Thomas belonged to many organizations including: Jaycees (Pres), Kiwanis (Pres), Watertown Area Chamber of Commerce (Pres), Watertown Parks and recreation board of directors (Ch. Of Bd), First United Methodist Church of Watertown (Board of Directors, Ch. Of Bd), SD state senator from Codington County ( 1971-72), State Bar of South Dakota as a Bar Commissioner and served as Chairman of the Real Property Probate and Trust Section and actively worked with the Watertown Community Foundation for many years.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents Durward M. Green, and Marian F. Judd Green

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of 51 years, Elizabeth A Green, San Antonio, TX; two children, Caryl L. Green, San Antonio, TX, and Michael J. (Renee) Green, Sherwood, AR; two grandchildren, Abigail Elizabeth age 5 and Adam Judd Green age 1, and one Sister Linda C. (James L.) Hale, Indianapolis, IN.

A memorial service will be held in San Antonio, TX at a later date.
