VERMILLION (AP) — A candidate for mayor in Vermillion has pleaded guilty to ingesting marijuana, but the drug conviction won't spell the end of Nick Severson's campaign.
Severson pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge on Tuesday, and he says he will push for the legalization of marijuana if he's elected mayor.
Two other charges against Severson were dropped.
The 27-year-old University of South Dakota senior has said he thinks the city would benefit from the legalization of marijuana because it could tax the drug.
City Council President Jack Powell is the other candidate for mayor.
