Julie Renner and Sam Miller were honored as the Vermillion High School Students of the Month for April. Their leadership in academics and extra-curricular activities were noted by faculty recommendations. Each will receive a $100 scholarship from First Bank & Trust-Vermillion.
Renner "is one of the most creative young ladies I have had the pleasure to meet," according to her faculty endorsement. "Her attention to detail is amazing!" She plans to attend the University of Minnesota-Morris to major in both secondary education and history.
Her multitude of high school activities include Concert Choir, cross country, One Act plays, National Honor Society, and Science Olympiad.
Her honors have included being a Girls State delegate, homecoming queen, and Outstanding Performer at the State One Acts. Her parents are Jolynn Bugbee and Kenneth Renner.
Miller also has remained very active in his high school career with involvement in Student Council, Young Democrats, National Honor Society, Natural Helpers and Oral Interp. His efforts have garnered the State Student Council President and the Outstanding Speaker at Boys State along with recently being named as an Argus Leader Academic All-Star. His parents are Steve Miller and Jill Tyler.
"Sam has always been one of my most enthusiastic students over the past four years," as noted by his faculty nomination. "I've been amazed at how he can juggle so many important roles all at once." Miller's plans after high school are to attend either the University of South Dakota or Wake Forest University to study philosophy or psychology.
This was the final awards for the 2009-2010 school year at Vermillion High School. Many other deserving candidates were nominated including Steffani Donahoe, Elise Hughes Burheim, Tanner Mart, Lacy Liechtnam, Jennifer Bye, Jason Rasmussen, Molly LeCates, Stacie Kjelden, Ashley Ouellette, and Paige Korn.
