Virginia F. Cuka

Virginia F. Cuka, age 78, of Yankton, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at her residence.  Funeral services were 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, rural Irene, with Rev. Dana Steinwand officiating.  Burial was 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Garden of Memories, Yankton. Visitations will be 5 to 9 p.m., Monday, at the Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Yankton, with a scripture service and video tribute and 7 p.m.  Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

She was born on Nov. 5, 1931, the sixth of seven children raised during the Depression to Ida (Howey) and Arthur Johnson near Vermillion.  She was baptized and confirmed at the Meckling Lutheran Church which her grandfather helped build.  She graduated in 1949 from Meckling High School.  On Aug. 15, 1950 she married her husband Donald (Don) Cuka.  They started farming in Crofton, NE in 1952.  In 1956, they moved to their farm northwest of Yankton where they raised their four children.  She belonged to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where she served in numerous capacities from teacher to quilter. She was also a member of "The Club." She loved laughter, Precious Moments, bird watching, flowers and vegetable gardening and hosting the many family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years Donald Cuka (Utica); her son Brad and his wife Joann Cuka (Meckling), her daughters, Lynelle and her husband James Goeders (Belle Fourche) and Kristle and her husband Duane Christensen (Huron).  She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother Robert and Nat Johnson (Vermillion), and her sisters Harriet Randall (Vermillion) Eileen Johnson and Wally Schaeffer (Yankton) and Shirley and Ivan Ruth (Memphis, MO) and sister-in-law Marge Shore (Franklin, WI) and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Gail Gunderson and grandson Daniel Cuka.  Also preceding her in death were her parents, Arthur and Ida Johnson, baby sister, Ardis Johnson and older brother, Howard Johnson.
