Darlene Eunice Campbell Babb died on June 14, 2010 at Sanford Hospital in Vermillion.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 18 at the Wakonda Irene High School Gymnasium. Burial will follow in the Union Cemetery, rural Wakonda.
Visitation was Thursday, June 17 at Wakonda High School Gymnasium with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Darlene Campbell, daughter of Elward and Lillian Campbell was born on June 21, 1926 in Onida. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1944 and attended nursing school in Rochester, MN for one year before marrying Ronald A. Babb on July 25, 1946.
Darlene spent several years raising a family, and then attended Mt. Marty College for two years. After that she enrolled at USD where she graduated in 1964 with a degree in secondary education. She also earned a masters degree in English literature from USD. She taught for one year at Centerville High School and from 1965 until 1985 at Wakonda High School. While at Wakonda, Darlene taught English, drama, and was the librarian, she also coached golf. Darlene loved to travel and after retiring took many trips with friends Odile Babb and Germaine Hanson. Upon her grandchildren's graduation from high school, she treated them to a trip and accompanied them to their choice of locations which included Hawaii, Scotland, New York City, Oregon and Washington. Darlene and Ronnie also spent many wonderful winters together in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
Darlene was a member of First Lutheran Church in Wakonda, Wakonda Legion Auxiliary, Glenridge Golf Club, Eastern Star, and a lifetime member of SDEA. She also participated in or directed many community projects.
Those left behind to cherish her memory are her husband, Ronald Babb of Wakonda; son, Jim (Lee Ann) Babb of Beresford; a daughter, Jane (Charlie) Johnson of Meckling; and son, Jack (Beth) Babb of Sioux Falls; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Roger (Doris) Campbell of Brandon; and step-sister, Sherree Schmiedt of Centerville. Her parents precede her in death.
