The University of South Dakota's Emma Erickson and Crystal Schiernbeck have been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 7 Women's Track/Cross Country team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced.
The duo earned second-team honors after posting impressive performances on the track and in the classroom during the 2009-10 season. Erickson (Gayville) earned eight All-Great West honors during her sophomore campaign, while being named GWC Track Athlete of the Week five times during the season. She won the 400 and 800 meters at the GWC Indoor Championships and was a member of the distance medley relay that claimed first. She also ran a leg on the 4×400-meter relay that finished second, as the Coyote women claimed their second consecutive team title.
At the GWC Outdoor Championships she won the 800 meters, placed second in the 400 meters and 1,500 meters and was a member of the 4×400-meter relay that place third. During the season she set school records in the indoor and outdoor 800 meters, including running a personal-best 2:06.83. The time qualified her for the U.S. Indoor Championships in the event. She has a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average in the classroom and is majoring in psychology.
Schiernbeck (Ida Grove, IA) earned two All-Great West honors during her junior season. She won the pentathlon at the GWC Indoor Championships with a season-best 3,182 points to help the Coyote women win their second consecutive team title. She also placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles and long jump at the event.
At the GWC Outdoor Championships, she won the heptathlon, placed fifth in the javelin and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles. She was named GWC Track Athlete of the Week once during the season and carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom while majoring in psychology.
To qualify for the CoSIDA award, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore status athletically and academically, participate in half of the team's scheduled contests and possess at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
