There are a few simple, inexpensive steps everyone can take to help protect their homes from flood damage.
Offering helpful advice on flood-related home improvement projects, mitigation outreach teams from the Federal Management Agency (FEMA) are setting up an information booth in the Nygren's True Value in Vermillion to provide advice and written materials on a wide range of home-improvement measures, including:
• Relocating the circuit breaker panel and basement outlets above potential flood waters.
• Moving the washer and dryer to a higher floor.
• Having a licensed plumber install a backflow valve to prevent sewer back-up.
• How to deal with mold and mildew.
Mitigation experts say that by following a few simple steps, homeowners can evaluate and improve the integrity of their homes to dramatically decrease their vulnerability to costly repetitive repairs.
The FEMA team will be available 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, June 24-26, at Nygren's True Value, 9 Court St., Vermillion, SD 57069.
