On June 17 from 5-7 p.m., the Clay County Historical Society will be having its annual ice cream social. The social traditionally features home baked pies and cakes along with taverns, lemonade and coffee. The social will be held on the grounds of the Austin-Whittemore House, 15 Austin St., which is one block south of the Clay County Court House. If the weather should prove to be inclement, the social will move to the W. H. Over Museum. Food will be served on a free-will donation basis and will be available for take-out orders..
John and Susan McNeill of Springfield will provide musical entertainment. The board of directors of the Clay County Historical Society is serving as the committee in charge. Lisa Johnson is serving a general chairman assisted by Gloria Christopherson. Gloria Barnes is president of the society. The Austin-Whittemore House is open most mornings and is always available by appointment. The house is an amazing repository of local history and is furnished with furniture donated by local residents; some of it is original to the house. The house will be open for tours the night of the social and everyone is welcome.
