Lorna Lucille Steckler, 87, passed away May 28, 2010 in Phoenix, AZ of natural causes.
Lorna was born Jan. 12, 1923 in Hawarden, IA to Alma Belle Bancroft and Harry Lee Mullen. Later, her family moved to Huron, where she graduated from Huron High School in 1941. Lorna excelled at baton twirling and was a drum majorette in high school. She then went on to attend the University of South Dakota. At USD, she studied her passion, art, and received her Bachelor's Degree of Fine Art in 1945. After graduating, Lorna moved to Minneapolis and worked as a fashion illustrator for Bjorkman's Department Store doing their newspaper and magazine advertisements.
Lorna married Douglas L. Steckler, March 29, 1947 in the United Methodist Church in Vermillion. They lived briefly in Huron, and a few years in Pierre, and finally settled permanently in Vermillion, where they raised two children, Doug and Mona. Lorna taught nursery school for the University of South Dakota Psychology Dept. and supported and contributed to the university and Alpha Phi Sorority throughout her life. She was a long-time member of United Methodist Church of Vermillion and maintained strong faith. Her passion was art, with writing a close second. Lorna was a gifted individual, a fine artist and prolific poet. Her creative talents exhibited themselves in everything she did.
Due to health reasons, in 2002 Lorna moved to Phoenix, to be near her daughter. There she lived near her family until her death.
Lorna is survived by her son, Douglas M. Steckler of Los Angeles, CA; daughter, Ramona Schaefer and son-in-law Richard Schaefer of Phoenix, AZ; grandson, Justin Schaefer and wife Kristin, granddaughter Whitney Flynn and husband Justin, granddaughter Lesley Blakemore and husband Rory, and six great grandchildren, Alyson Flynn, Evan Schaefer, Collin Flynn, Ethan Blakemore, Cole Schaefer, and Adelyn Blakemore, all of Phoenix, AZ; nephews, Harold Baker and wife Norma of Angola, IN, Robert Baker and wife Lynn of Norfolk, NE, Ronnie Steckler of Avon; nieces, Roberta Wagner and husband Randy of Hoskins, NE, and Peggy Reiter and husband Joe of Sioux Falls.
Lorna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Douglas, in 1992.
Memorial services will be held Friday, June 18 at 2:30 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Vermillion, 16 N. Dakota St. Vermillion.
