The new season of Vermillion Red Sox amateur baseball is underway, and after a game against the hometown Grey Sox on Wednesday of this week, Kirk Sorensen's Red Sox will have four contests under their belts.
The Red Sox will next be in action at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Prentis Park against the Renner Monarchs. Next week the Sox go to Elk Point to play the Stags in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
Vermillion's season opened in Larchwood, IA, with a 6-5 loss to the Diamonds. Robin Chute and Cody Aughton led the offense with a double each. Garrett Linhardt was the starter and took the loss, going 4 2/3 innings on the mound. Ken Longman threw 1 1/3 innings and Tyler Benz took the hill for three innings.
Justin Beebe had a home run for the Red Sox, but it wasn't enough in a 4-2 loss at Brandon Valley. Linhardt pitched five innings for Vermillion, and Justin Green threw three innings and sustained the loss.
The Red Sox got on the winning side of the ledger in yet another close one, a 7-6 win at Akron against the Rebels. Chute slugged his first home run of the season to lead the Vermillion offense.
Five different men saw action on the mound for the Red Sox with Andrew Benton, the eventual winner, going two innings, Charlie Benz three innings, Ken Longman 1 2/3 innings, Kenny Longman 1 1/3 innings and Quentin Ybarra one inning.
