So far as Vermillion's baseball teams are concerned, last week was pretty much a total washout. And that statement has nothing to do with wins and losses.
Rains and subsequent wet grounds from Tuesday through the weekend prevented almost all baseball-related sports events for local teams.
The Vermillion Red Sox amateur club did get a game in last Tuesday before the week-long rainy pattern set in. The Sox won at Elk Point over the Stags, 7-4, as Garrett Linhardt went the nine-inning distance for the pitching win. The victory lifted the Red Sox to a 5-2 record for the season.
The Red Sox have a 2 p.m. Saturday date at Brookings against the Cubby's team, and next Wednesday at 7:30 they are slated to play at Dakota Valley.
The Post 1 American Legion team had its Tuesday home game against Bon Homme weathered out. They weren't scheduled again until this week, but Monday night's home date with Corsica also was called off because of the soaked Prentis Park diamond.
Post 1 is scheduled to participate this weekend in the College World Series tournament at the neighboring Omaha suburbs of Waterloo and Valley, Neb., and they hope to be able to take in a game or two at the College World Series itself.
Vermillion's games in Nebraska will be at 5:45 p.m. Friday against Syracuse, Neb.; at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against the Waterloo-Valley team, and at 2:15 Sunday against Nebraska City, Neb.
Next Tuesday Post 1 is slated for a doubleheader at 5 and 7 p.m. in Yankton.
The 15-16 VFW Teeners lost a full weekend of games at South Sioux City. The Saturday schedule was first postponed and the tournament reworked so that all games would fit on Sunday's slate, but weather then forced cancellation of that day's play as well.
That ballclub will try to play a 6 p.m. home game tonight (Friday) against Canton. On Monday they go to Dakota Valley at 6 p.m., and on Tuesday Sioux Falls South comes here for a 6 p.m. game. The Teeners will also be home next Thursday against Beresford.
The 13-14 VFW Teeners were rained out of a game at Lennox last Thursday. Next action for them will be games at the Lennox 13s next Monday at 6:30 and 8 p.m.
