Fresh on the heels of one of the most successful debate careers in this state's history, Vermillion debaters Sam Miller and Tyler Gutzman will be attending the NFL National Tournament, held over the course of this next week in Kansas City. Miller and Gutzman will be competing in policy debate, a style of debate that focuses on the policy implications of a particular course of action.
Since placing 10th at the national tournament last year, Miller and Gutzman have been virtually unstoppable in South Dakota, winning every tournament in South Dakota that they competed in, including the state championships and the top qualifier to nationals for South Dakota. Recently, Miller and Gutzman competed on the national stage at the Catholic Nationals, where they placed fifth out of a field that covered the entire United States.
No strangers to top-tier level competition, Miller and Gutzman, along with their coach, Bob Trzynka, feel optimistic about their chances. "The National Tournament is a real challenge," Trzynka said. "However, these guys (Miller and Gutzman) are some of the most talented debaters to come around in a long time. They have as good a shot as any at the top prize."
The NFL National Tournament will be held in Kansas City from June 12 to June 20.
