Delmer Nicholi Klanderud of Vermillion passed away on June 24, 2010, at the Sanford Vermillion Care Center.
Delmer was born March 18, 1918, in Wynot, NE, to Arthur and May (Taylor) Klanderud. He was raised in Flandreau, and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). From 1942 to 1946, he served in the 3rd Army, 26th Division in France, Luxemburg and Germany. After graduating from barber college in Oakland, CA, Delmer worked as a barber for 37 years, including 10 years at Shattuck School (boys' military school) in Faribault, MN and 15 years in Mesa, AZ. He retired in 1988. He sang with the Leisure World barbershop chorus in Mesa, AZ and was a member of the VFW. Delmer was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point.
Delmer is survived by his wife, Norma Ofstehage; daughter, Patricia (James) Hall and grandchildren Richard, Patricia and Samantha of Chandler, AZ; sister, Ruby (Marvin) Hanson of Dell Rapids; and cousins in Mapleton, IA and Hartington, NE. His parents and wife, Beatrice, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, at the Kober Funeral Home (formerly Iverson-Siecke), 402 East Main Street, Vermillion. Delmer donated his body to the University of South Dakota Medical School.
