Vermillion will be well represented at the 2010 South Dakota Long Course State Championships. The state swim meet, hosted by the South Dakota Local Swim Committee and the Mitchell Aquatic Club, will be held July 30 through Aug. 1 at the Mitchell Outdoor Aquatic Center, 1201 E. Hanson, Mitchell.
Thirteen members of the Vermillion Area Swim Team (VAST) have qualified for the state meet. Several local swimmers won individual events in a swim meet held last weekend which automatically qualified them to the state meet which begins Friday.
Automatic qualifiers from last weekend's South Dakota B/C championship meet are:
Kyleigh Chander, first place 200 free, first place 200 individual medley, first place 50 butterfly, second place 400 freestyle, third place in the 50 freestyle and qualified for state with state qualification time.
Ava Magee, first place in the 100 butterfly, 50 backstroke, and second place in the 50 breaststroke.
Katie Herrera, first place in the 50 free.
Kelsi Herrera, second place in the 50 free.

Of VAST's 13 state qualifiers this summer, 11 will compete. Two are gone on a family vacation.
Numerous VAST athletes are in the top eight in their age groups, including:
Madisen Lavin (including top times in the 100 fly, 100 back and 200 free), Madisen Martinez, Kyleigh Chandler, Stacie Kjelden and Hunter Lavin.
All events are swum in a 50m (Olympic sized) pool, and there will be a girls 9-10 200 meter medley and 200 meter freestyle relay at the meet.
"Everyone has been swimming very very well and we are all very excited to go up to Mitchell this weekend. Many people have shown continuous improvement throughout the season, with some swimmers making extremely big cuts in time," said VAST Coach Mike Moran. " This meet will be the last one of the summer season, unless swimmers qualify to the United States Swimming Central Zones Championships held in Lincoln, NE the following weekend. We will find out this weekend if we have any qualifiers for that."
